Business travel insurance covers risks during business trips abroad — medical expenses, repatriation, baggage, cancellation, and business risks such as laptop theft. Unlike private travel insurance, it also covers business items (laptop, samples), business liability, and short-term policies. Premiums: from €5/day or annual policies €200-€800. For SMEs with international clients or employees on trips abroad: an important supplement to regular insurance policies. Below you will find coverage, variants, and when to choose which one.

The short answer

  • What: covers risks during business trips abroad.
  • Covers: medical expenses, repatriation, baggage, cancellation, business supplies.
  • Types: per trip (daily rate) or annual policy (often more economical for frequent travel).

Two product forms

Business travel premium from €5 per day

1. Per trip (day rate)

For occasional business trips — depending on destination and duration. For EU travel: €5-€15/day. Worldwide: €10-€30/day. Suitable for 1-3 trips per year.

2. Annual policy

For regular business trips — all trips within the year covered up to a maximum duration per trip (typically 60-90 days). Premium €200-€800/year depending on the number of trips and coverage level. Suitable for 5+ trips per year.

Variant: collective annual policy for employers with multiple traveling employees.

Important aspects

Destination and high-risk areas

Some countries (war zones, sanctioned countries) are not covered or have a higher premium. Check Dutch travel advice (overheid.nl) — often no coverage in case of negative travel advice.

Long-term stay

For expat stationing or training of 60+ days: separate expat insurance is required. Standard business travel covers short trips.

Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing conditions are often excluded. For employees with a chronic illness: separate notification and possible medical examination.

Baggage limits

Standard €1,500-€5,000 baggage coverage. For laptops/electronics, there is often a sublimit (€1,000-€2,500). For higher value: additional coverage via a separate baggage package.

When which form?

  • 1-3 trips per year: per-trip coverage.
  • 5+ trips per year: individual annual policy.
  • Multiple traveling employees: collective annual policy.
  • Expat stationing: separate expat insurance.

For SMEs with international activity

Important conditions for business travelers:

  • Laptop coverage with a sufficient sublimit (€2,500+).
  • Repatriation including medically escorted ambulance flight.
  • Business liability in the coverage area.
  • Acceptable waiting time in case of cancellation.
  • 24/7 emergency center.

Saskia's business trips

Saskia (cleantech startup) travels 8 times a year to EU clients and occasional global conferences:

  • Annual policy EU + worldwide: €450/year.
  • Including laptop cover €3,500 (her work machine).
  • Plus 24/7 emergency center.

Lost laptop during trip to Germany: claim of €3,200 paid out. Policy investment quickly recouped.

Honest recommendation

Advisor arranges travel insurance

For SMEs with international activity: business travel insurance is an affordable defense against travel risks. Per-trip for occasional trips, annual policy for regular travel. Avoid relying solely on private travel insurance — business belongings and liability are often left uncovered. For employees on overseas missions: an employer-paid policy ensures peace of mind and employee satisfaction.

For other topics: insurance for SME companies, general liability and delivery van insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does business travel insurance cover?

Medical expenses, repatriation, luggage (incl. business items such as a laptop), cancellation, and business liability during business trips abroad. Unlike a private policy: business items are included in the coverage.

How much does it cost?

Per trip: €5-€30/day depending on destination and coverage level. Individual annual policy: €200-€800/year for frequent travel. Group policy for multiple employees: often cheaper per person.

Per trip or annual policy?

Per-trip for 1-3 business trips/year. Annual policy for 5+ trips — typically cheaper per trip. For SMEs with multiple traveling employees: collective annual policy. For expats: separate expat policy.

Does private travel insurance cover business?

Limited or not. Business items (laptop, samples) and liability are often excluded in private policies. A separate business policy for business trips is advisable — it prevents rejected claims.

What are baggage limits?

Standard €1,500-€5,000 total baggage coverage with sub-limits for specific items (laptop €1,000-€2,500). For higher value: additional coverage via a separate baggage package or policy extension.

What about high-risk destinations?

In the event of negative Dutch travel advice (overheid.nl): often no coverage. War zones and sanctioned countries are excluded. For travel to high-risk destinations: separate short-term business insurance or specific products from a specialized company.

Pre-existing conditions?

Pre-existing conditions are often excluded from standard policies. For employees with a chronic illness: separate notification to the insurer and possibly a medical examination are required. Prevents a rejected claim for illness related to the condition.
