A webshop and the GDPR can be perfectly combined, provided you have the basics in order: only request the personal data you really need, determine the correct legal basis for each processing activity, and explain everything clearly in your privacy statement.

You quickly process personal data

If you have customers, you process personal data: name and address alone fall under this. Therefore, you must comply with the GDPR rules. The most important thing is to consciously consider what data you request and why.

Ask only for what you need

The GDPR requires data minimization: do not collect more data than necessary for the purpose. Do not make fields that are not necessary mandatory. This prevents you from processing data without a legal basis.

The right foundation

You need a legal basis for every processing activity (Article 6 GDPR). The performance of a purchase covers a lot — such as processing address data to enable delivery — but for marketing or a newsletter, you often need separate consent.

Store, secure and inform

Determine how long you retain data and secure it appropriately. Specify in your privacy statement which data you process, why, for how long, and what the customer's rights are. If you engage suppliers who process data, enter into a data processing agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information am I allowed to ask customers for?

Only what you need for the purpose. A phone number, for example, is rarely necessary; make such fields optional.

May I use customer data for marketing?

You usually need separate permission for this; the legal basis for the purchase does not automatically cover marketing.

What should be in my privacy statement?

Which data you process, for what purpose and on what legal basis, how long you retain it, with whom you share it, and the rights of the customer.
