If you wish to employ minors in your company, strict rules from the Working Hours Act and the further regulations regarding child labor apply. Much depends on age: in principle, a work ban applies to children up to and including the age of twelve.

Children up to and including twelve years of age

In principle, there is a ban on working for children up to and including the age of twelve. There are limited exceptions, for example for participating in performances or similar special activities, and for community service through Bureau Halt. Outside of these exceptions, you may not employ children of this age.

Thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds

From the age of thirteen, a child may perform light, non-industrial work, such as odd jobs or helping in a shop, under strict conditions. The work must not endanger safety, health, or school attendance, and there are limits on working hours, with more flexibility during holidays.

Fifteen-year-olds

Fifteen-year-olds are allowed slightly more, such as light work and delivery work, again within fixed limits on working hours and with protection for their school attendance. Restrictions continue to apply to riskier tasks and machinery.

Sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds

For sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds, there are broader possibilities, but still limitations: they are not allowed to perform certain dangerous work, and rules apply regarding working and rest times. Adhere to these limits to avoid fines.
