You may sell alcohol and even spirits online, but a tangle of rules applies. The most important: you may not sell to persons under 18, you must reliably verify age (including upon delivery), and excise duties and other fiscal obligations apply to the import of spirits.

Selling alcohol online is allowed, subject to rules

The Alcohol Act permits the remote sale of alcoholic beverages, including spirits (drinks typically containing 15% alcohol or more). However, you must comply with strict conditions; the rules apply online and for delivery as well, not just in the physical store.

Age limit and age verification

You may not sell or supply alcohol to persons under the age of 18. For online sales, you must reliably verify age — both at the time of ordering and at the time of delivery. A single 'I am 18+' checkmark is insufficient; requirements apply to a functioning verification system.

Import, excise duty and tax

If you import spirits, excise duties and other tax obligations come into play. Carefully calculate these costs and obligations in advance and ensure your records are accurate. (Rates and rules may change; check the current regulations with the Tax and Customs Administration.)

Advertising and further terms and conditions

Alcohol advertising is subject to specific rules (such as the Advertising Code for Alcoholic Beverages), including regulations regarding targeting minors. Additionally, ensure accurate product information and general terms and conditions. Have your webshop checked to ensure compliance with all regulations.
