When delivering valuable goods, such as expensive watches or precious metals, transport risks are particularly high. At the same time, the impact of loss or theft is immense. It is important to know who is responsible if the package is lost in transit and how the risks can be minimized.

Risks associated with traditional delivery services

Shipping valuable goods via a delivery service entails inherent risks, such as damage or loss. These courier services liability typically general terms and conditions , or limit liability to a specific amount. This arrangement is permitted, certainly in relation to companies and webshops. The consumer, however, is better protected in their personal relationship with the professional seller or webshop. In practice, this means that the webshop is responsible to the consumer for the correct delivery of the package. It is not permitted to make other arrangements regarding this in the general terms and conditions. In other words, the risk of loss or damage lies entirely with the supplier, because the delivery service also limits its responsibility.

Increased liability for parcel services

Some parcel services offer solutions, such as insured shipping or increased liability for valuable goods. At PostNL, for example, it is possible to insure against damage or loss for up to 5,000 euros. The recipient is then required to sign upon receipt. Not all parcel services offer this, and naturally, it entails extra costs. Moreover, the (general) terms and conditions also play a role here. These determine when damage, loss, force majeure , and the like apply. It is important to review these conditions carefully beforehand.

Charge higher shipping costs for valuable shipments

Insuring valuable items during shipping results in higher shipping costs. The webshop is not obligated to bear these costs (fully) itself. It is perfectly possible to pass these on to the customer, provided this was agreed upon and clearly stated in advance. Even for webshops offering free shipping, it is possible to make an exception for valuable goods. Alternatively, self-collection of the valuable product could be offered as a free alternative.
