If you are a self-employed professional making the switch to salaried employment—due to declining assignments, a need for security, or stricter enforcement of the DBA Act—do so in a structured manner. In six steps, you can arrange the transition properly, from assessing your situation to winding down your business.

Step 1: Determine your reason and wishes

Map out why you are making the switch and what you want: more security, a stable income, or less risk due to enforcement against bogus self-employment. Your wishes will determine what you negotiate, such as position, salary, and employment conditions.

Step 2: Discuss it with your client

If you have been working for a client for a long time, they are often the logical employer — especially if the collaboration already effectively resembles an employment relationship. Discuss the possibility of salaried employment and gauge their willingness. Moreover, for the client, an employment relationship eliminates the risk of back taxes due to bogus self-employment.

Steps 3 and 4: negotiate and conclude an employment contract

Negotiate salary, position, working hours, vacation, and any stipulations, and pay attention to the probationary period. Record the agreements in a written employment contract. Have it reviewed so that you know what you are signing and the terms are correct.

Steps 5 and 6: wind down your business and settle the tax matters

Complete ongoing assignments and decide whether to close your business or continue it (partially). If you stop, deregister with the Chamber of Commerce, close your VAT records, and settle the final tax returns. Also adjust your insurance: as an employee, you are insured for matters you handled yourself as a self-employed professional.
