Employees with children can receive childcare allowance, and employers contribute collectively to its financing through a statutory levy. In addition, as an employer, you can provide extra support to employees with children, for example through leave arrangements and flexible working hours.

Childcare allowance and the employer's contribution

Parents who work (or study) and use registered childcare can receive childcare allowance from the government. The 'employer contribution' to this is financed collectively: employers contribute via a statutory levy on the total payroll, without you having to arrange this separately for each employee.

What else can you do?

In addition to that mandatory contribution, you can support employees with children through employment conditions: flexible or adjusted working hours, working from home, and facilitating leave. This increases engagement and helps employees combine work and care.

Consider leave entitlements

Employees with children have various statutory leave entitlements, such as parental leave (partially paid via the UWV), paternity leave for partners, and emergency and short-term care leave. Ensure that you are aware of these rights and apply them correctly; refusal is not permitted without good reason. (The exact duration and compensation may change; check the current regulations.)

Establish your policy

Include your agreements regarding working hours, working from home, and leave in an employee handbook. A clear policy, communicated in advance, prevents unequal treatment and disputes, and makes you more attractive as an employer.

Frequently Asked Questions

As an employer, do I have to contribute to childcare?

The employer's contribution is financed collectively via a statutory levy on the total payroll; this is calculated automatically, not per employee.

Can I refuse a parent's leave request?

You cannot simply refuse statutory leave entitlements. Assess requests carefully and adhere to the rules.

What extra can I do for working parents?

Flexible working hours, working from home, and properly facilitating leave. Document this in your personnel policy.
